and chroming over aluminum doesnt seem to hold up long-term due to interaction between the metals. True that polishing needs to be maintained, but you can repolish over and over again. As long as a clear-coat can be applied over the polished aluminum (and have it stick- which is questionable) that would be the way to go. For chrome plating, the substrate basically has to be be polished first anyway.
